Private Ventures

Cordish Private Ventures ("CPV") is the private equity investment arm of the Cordish Companies. Founded in 1998, CPV invests primarily in leading private equity funds, and seeks superior risk-adjusted returns with a long-term investment horizon.

Since 1998, CPV has made more than forty investments. While CPV has investment experience across the spectrum of private equity asset classes--including venture capital, buyouts, mezzanine debt and distressed assets--it has a particular focus on smaller, highly differentiated and specialized buyout funds focused on lower middle-market operating businesses.

CPV also makes a limited number of non-controlling direct equity investments in operating companies. Notable direct private equity investments include Bravo Health, Inc., Caspian Networks, Sophia Wireless, and Theravance, Inc. (Nasdaq:SYNQ).

In addition, in 2012, CPV completed a joint venture partnership with Dixon Advisory & Superannuation Services Limited of Australia. The joint venture, US Select Private Opportunities Fund, LP, has a mandate to continue CPV’s successful strategy of investing in U.S.-based buyout managers focused on lower middle-markets. Mr. Jonathan Cordish and Ms. Margaret Cordish, two principals of CPV, serve on the Advisory Board of this joint venture (see below for their biographies). CPV is led by Managing Partner Jonathan A. Cordish. Jonathan has significant experience in private equity and venture capital finance prior to his tenure at Cordish. From 1999 to 2001, he served as a Vice President and Partner at Riggs Capital Partners, a private equity firm based in Washington, D.C. that deployed over $130 million to more than 30 private equity and venture capital funds, as well as direct equity investments to privately held companies. Prior to Riggs Capital Partners, Jonathan received a Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School, where he graduated with Distinction with a concentration in Private Equity Finance.

Jonathan has served on the Advisory Board of Spring Capital Partners, a mezzanine debt fund based in Baltimore, Maryland, and currently serves on the Advisory Board of Prometheus Partners. Jonathan is also Chairman of Cordish Media Inc., a company he founded in Los Angeles in 1994, and where he served as the CEO from 1994 to 1997. Cordish Media remains one of the longest operating and consistently profitable independent film distribution companies in the United States.

Joining Jonathan at CPV are two other principals: Margaret Cordish and Jonathan Sinex.

Margaret is primarily responsible at CPV for sourcing and evaluating potential private equity investments. Prior to joining CPV, she was an Equity Analyst at Telsey Advisory Group focusing on specialty stores. Her role involved comprehensive fundamental analysis, financial modeling and liaising with senior company management. Previously, she was instrumental in the development of Basel Asset Management, where she served as a Hedge Fund Research Analyst. She has also previously worked at HSBC Private Bank in the Alternative Advisory Group, where she was on the research committee responsible for fund ratings and credit approval. Margaret has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia Business School, Columbia University. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of New Markets Education Partners LP, a Maryland-based private equity firm.

Jonathan Sinex has over eight years of investing, finance and operating experience. In 2011, Mr. Sinex served as the interim Chief Financial Officer for Enviroscent, Inc. a portfolio company of the private equity firm Alerion Partners. Prior to Enviroscent, Mr. Sinex worked as a Vice President at Devonwood Investors, a New York based distressed opportunity investment fund. Before Devonwood, Mr. Sinex was a Financial Analyst in the Merchant Banking division of Goldman Sachs where he concentrated on evaluating potential acquisitions for the Whitehall funds. In this capacity, Mr. Sinex helped deploy more than $1 billion of equity capital. Mr. Sinex began his finance career as an investment banker at Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. Jonathan received his Masters of Business Administration, with highest honors, from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and his B.A. from Middlebury College.
